Hometown Show for The Synth Pop Hero, Allie X

by Peyton Mott

A Girl With No Face Tour brought a set donned with red rope, the house lights down, and stage lit with only a glowing keyboard. Allie X made her debut to the stage with the classic hit, “Bitch” accompanied by ear piercing screams of die hard fans. Much like the “X” in her stage name, Allie X’s talent is unquantifiable. With haunting operatic vocals contrasted by wavering synths, the venue was filled with a dancing darkness. The show, hosted at The Opera House, was a sentimental one as Toronto is the artists hometown as she lovingly mentioned, with her family sitting in the balcony.

Synth pop is nothing new, but Allie X reinvents the genre with every song, then continues to reinvent the songs in her live show. With a more stripped down edition of “Galina” the variation of Allie X is what makes her art so unique. If you’re in the crowd at A Girl WIth No Face Tour, be prepared to be unprepared.

“This is most definitely the cuntiest song i’ve ever made,” Allie X announced before throwing herself into the last track of the set, “Off With Her Tits.” While it’s expected that most shows have an encore, the burning desire from the crowd for just one more song from the Toronto native was palpable.
