The Thing With Feathers Rock Frankenmuth, MI
By Kaleigh Gieraltowski
Nashville based indie rock band The Thing With Feathers recently took the city of Frankenmuth by storm where they headlined a local event “A Night in Fischer Hall”. They have a strong indie pop and rock sound that is seamlessly correlated with the stories told in their songwriting. Balancing a light-hearted and enticing sound while also incorporating a narrative in their lyrics has proven to combine their songs into an all around unapologetic masterpiece that tells stories of youth and relatable experiences.
This event was a collaboration of five bands in which The Thing With Feathers ended the night as the final act. Starting off their set strong with their original song “Static”, lead vocalist Dave Welcsh joined the stage with an abundance of energy that immediately transferred into the audience. Their song “Static” begins with a lowkey guitar intro that leads into the upbeat medley that makes this song so magnetizing as an opener. Their 12 song setlist included songs from their newest EP “Waste My Revenge”, that dropped on April 7th, 2023. Some songs that stood out to me as clear hits included “Can You See Me”, a vibrant track that was deemed to be a fan favorite as the audience danced with the band during the electric chorus.
There is no question that putting on an entertaining and interactive show is a priority for these band members. Not only do they immediately draw you in with their musical abilities, their on-stage ambiance left me in awe. One of the most eye-catching artists sharing the stage is The Thing With Feathers' very own drummer Chris Roussell. He was enrapturing with his musicality and ability to bring life to the show without ever leaving his drum kit. His high energy and skill on the drums really pulled their sound together. To the right of Chris, the band's lead guitarist Alex Hendricks was another extreme talent that buzzed around the stage with many electric and funk guitar solos.
They performed at Fisher Hall in Frankenmuth with limited space and turned the stage room they had into a full performance. When I entered the small venue I noticed the crowd was able to lean directly against the stage. Leaving the space between myself and the band limited, they used this to their advantage to engage the crowd. Vocalist Dave Welcsh and guitarist Kyle Briskin shared multiple charming moments shredding on the strings together during their song “What You Want”. The chemistry between the band members radiated as adrenaline rushed through me to keep that high energy all the way to the encore. With a performance as exciting as this, I couldn’t help but to feel a sense of intimacy. With the way their lyrics tell a story and how their excitement to be there was contagious, it left me with an all time high exiting the show. Ultimately, there is no lack of talent in Nashville's very own up-and-coming band The Thing With Feathers as I found my eyes darting around the stage not knowing who to look at. The band is working on new music and have upcoming shows in Nashville on July 17th, and in Cleveland on September 16th. This is a band you truly don’t want to miss out on and you can listen to their newest EP “Waste My Revenge” on apple music and spotify now!
