relive summer with the brummies and their new single 'after midnight'

By Amy Tang

As we begin to welcome the autumn season with greetings of pumpkin spiced drinks, spooky-themed decorations and our favorite sweatshirts, The Brummies are here to remind us of that sweet summer nostalgia in their latest feel-good release, “After Midnight.”

Brought up just outside of Birmingham, The Brummies –– composed of vocalists and guitarists John Davidson and Jacob Bryant, and drummer Trevor Davis –– have already begun to make a name for themselves in the music scene. From the successful release of their debut album, Eternal Reach in 2018, which featured a collaboration with country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves on hazy single “Drive Away,” to their tours around the globe with bands like The Wild Feathers, NEEDTOBREATHE, BANNERS, and playing a handful of festivals, the indie-pop trio is quickly on the rise and it shows.

Deviating from their usual rock and indie-folk mix, “After Midnight” takes listeners on an infectious, disco-esque 80s swing. The beginning of the track eases listeners in with a thumping bass before bringing in the shimmering synth and funky, upbeat rhythm. “We know the rhythm / We just need the time / After midnight when you show up at mine again, again” Davidson sings, reminiscing about late night rendezvous. From the beginning to the end, the chorus runs pretty dominant throughout the song, making it impossible to not sing along to the verses: “Oh you and I can just dance around / Even though we both want it now / I’ll lift you up and you can hold me down / You just gotta come over.”

“After Midnight” is light-hearted, easy to listen to, and honestly, quite addictive. Lyrically, the writing in this track is nothing out of the ordinary, or profound, compared to the band’s previous works. However, the single shines in its production, and effortlessly sweeps listeners away to their alternate summer reality of dancing under the stars.
