On Jan. 25, Northwest released their song “Apathy," which features a spunky guitar and contemplative lyrics.  “Apathy” is the band’s first single of the year, following their sophomore album, Suburban Dogs

“Apathy” is an introspective song reflecting on a lack of interest and concern. The lyrics “They say we’re a product of those around us / In that case, I’m apathetic, honest / I wanna break free from the shackles of this life that I’m currently trapped in” show that the sense of apathy being experienced is not intentional. It’s very reflective, as the band is pondering not only who they are, but also who they are surrounding themselves with. Their current state is not a way of living they want to partake in, but one they feel stuck in.

Northwest also reflects on focusing on the self when singing, “I can’t be someone you rely on / I got my own problems to deny." This idea of not being able to help someone when you cannot help yourself is one that many people can recognize in their personal lives. Although it is an important idea to discuss, it is not nearly evident enough in discussions and music. Northwest brings a valid point to their song: sometimes, people have to face their problems and sort them out before they can be available to other people.

The self-reflecting lyrics are accompanied by a bold guitar and steady drums. Northwest is a bedroom-pop band, and this song reflects their style in both the lyrics and the music accompanying it. A steady percussion line gives “Apathy” a solid beat that leaves an impression on listeners and complements the overall sound of the song. The strong and dynamic guitar tone gives the song eclectic energy and a bold sound that is different, yet impressionable and enjoyable.

“Apathy” is a valiant, eclectic and highly reflective piece that shows the style and sound of Northwest. Their first single of the new year sets the tone for their upcoming releases and has shown to be a success.
