everything will be 'ok' after listening to wallows' new single

By Amy Tang

It’s been nearly a year since the release of Wallows’ debut album Nothing Happens, and, since then, fans have been patiently waiting for a new record from the Los Angeles-based band. Composed of vocalists and guitarists Dylan Minnette and Braeden Lemasters and drummer Cole Preston, the trio has come a long way from performing makeshift demos in their garages.

Having recently wrapped up the last leg of their extensive Nothing Happens Tour, the band has hinted to fans about its future projects on social media, with Minnette tweeting on January 30, “definitely not recording a new wallows song rn,” leaving many followers feeling restless and eager to hear what the boys had in store. Now, the wait has finally come to an end, as Wallows returned with a new song, “OK,” on March 20.

Delving into a new era, the timeless track has an unforgettable retro feel. From the song’s snazzy riffs and bouncy keys to its glimmering touches of synth, it’s evident that Wallows is changing up its style. Taking on lead vocals, Minnette has no trouble hitting the notes and following through with the melodies. Following the single’s release, the band described it as “a song about insecurities in a relationship; having a hard time accepting something that feels ‘too good to be true,’” in a newsletter. But, amidst the world’s current chaos, the timing of its release seems more relevant now than ever. In the song’s main hook, Minnette asks, “Can we get up and try to feel okay again?” and, honestly, who knows?

“OK” is reflective of not only the unpredictable ups and downs in life, but also captures the band’s growth as a whole. As Wallows continues to develop and expand its sound, listeners can leave with the takeaway in the song’s outro: “We can get up and try to feel okay again.”
