eliza and the delusionals' new ep creates a world of its own

By Jillian Cote

From their debut EP in 2017 to the 2020 release of their new single “Pull Apart Heart,” indie rock group Eliza & The Delusionals has never been afraid to set themselves apart through bold sound and captivating lyrics. Their newest EP, A State of Living in an Objective Reality, is no exception to this phenomenon, as it explores the human experiences of melancholy, creation, and everything in between.

With over 1.7 million Spotify streams on their single “Just Exist”, the excitement for the new album is quite apparent and for good reason. The lyrics “You were in my head last night / Was I on your mind?” bring about a sense of longing for what once was, allowing for exploration of this feeling in the chorus as singer Eliza Klatt sings, “It could make it easier / If I could just exist without you”. To Klatt, “Just Exist,” as well as the process of making music in general, is an outlet to take some of life’s most negative feelings and transform them into something beautifully bittersweet.

In the same vein as “Just Exist,” “Pull Apart Heart” transforms feelings of heartache into inspiration through self-realization. The lyrics “Paper thin is wearing in the rain / Like  the seasons‚ I know that I can change” show both the experience of exhaustion as well as the awareness of this vulnerability, and the chorus lyrics “My pull apart heart” relay the feeling of being in pieces as a result of life’s changes. The expression of despair and frustration over being spread too thin is something that many can relate to, adding a feeling of connection to the EP. “ALIVE” echoes this sentiment in its chorus with the lyrics “I know I am not the only one / Why do I feel like the lonely one?”

A strong and energetic rock sound is found in each song, juxtaposing the raw lyrics and invoking a multitude of emotions that encapsulate the objective reality referenced in the EP’s title. The nostalgic undertones of the guitar riffs matched with spacious reverb of the vocals create a world of its own, proving that the band’s desire to be their purest form in their writing is very much possible. With this EP already so well received, much more can be expected from Eliza & The Delusionals throughout their musical career.
