baird defies genre in his album 'BIRDSONGS VOL. 2'

By Jillian Cote

For Baltimore native and LA-based artist Baird, taking inspiration from all aspects of life and combining the contrasting ideas into one seamless project is child’s play. His newest album, BIRDSONGS Vol. 2, is a perfect example of that. A follow-up to his 2018 release BIRDSONGS Vol. 1, Vol. 2 creates a pure, warm environment —  despite it being a fall release, the tracks evoke a sense of a sunny summer breeze.

“BITE,” the first track on the album, introduces a clean, groovy sound with a chunky bassline and jazz-influenced drumline. The lyrics seem to be Baird’s space to analyze his relationship with the music world, formulating his perception of who he wants to be in each verse. The lyrics “But I swear to God I got a new sound / No more running from the words now” in particular show Baird’s commitment to progressing his music and standing firmly in his creative energy. The implementation of horns and piano after the second verse allows the song to open up space and create a metaphorical spotlight for the outro, where the lyrics “I don't want nobody's business / I just want me and the sound waves” confirm his realization that his music is his expression, something that’s not up for negotiation with others.

Moving through the album, a Latin flare begins to become more and more apparent, particularly in the track “Beluga Baby.” This is no mistake — this project began in Mexico City, where much inspiration was drawn. Finishing the project in LA, the implementation of Spanish guitar riffs and percussion elements were a necessity for his genre-bending sound.

Of the tracks on BIRDSONGS Vol. 2, “Chasing Deer” is a standout song, namely for its integration of so many unique instrumental choices that blend together perfectly while also standing out on their own. The echoed reverb of the guitar in the intro of the song creates space with sound, and the persistent quarter beats of the percussion allow the song to feel light while also energized.

Overall, BIRDSONGS Vol. 2 is a strong follow-up to its predecessor, delivering a coherent yet individualistic sound that is tied together with a clean production. Putting out projects like this so early in a career shows major promise for Baird as he continues to create more, hopefully with the same level of experimentation and genuity.
