AVIV goes for creativity with latest "Failed English"

Singer, songwriter AVIV recently dropped her latest single, “Failed English,” a comedic and all too familiar feeling song that provides a catchy rhythm and sound. “Failed English” is the singer’s eighth single for Photo Finish Records.

In a previous statement, the singer said, "’Failed English’" highlights the incongruity of the narrative—detesting your ex while missing them.” 

There is more than one line in the single that does just that, providing jabs here and jabs there. It’s comedic and refreshing for the Indie genre. Not all of the singer’s songs are so upbeat, but “Failed English” parallels the sound of her singles “Black Coffee” and “Cookie Dough.” New listeners can find similarities with other bands like Calica, GRAE, and Wallice.

AVIV’s latest single relies too heavily on one demographic, which hinders any chance of relating to those beyond school bells. After a couple of run-throughs, I found myself not connecting with the song. Nonetheless, the singer presents another playable song for social gatherings, if that’s still a thing anymore. 

There’s room for growth here which is to be expected with any upcoming artist. It seems Indie is making a comeback, possibly becoming just as, if not more popular, than the pop genre. AVIV is a member of that new revolution in the music world but doesn’t bring anything groundbreaking to make herself stand out from the genre.

At 15 years old, AVIV, a native of Toronto, is hoping to spread a familiar glimpse into the past. With four siblings, including her twin brother, AVIV got a taste of the music world after years of record shopping on Queen Street. As a fan of Fleetwood Mac and Radiohead, she sought to capture a reminiscing feel for youth. AVIV has been acclaimed by Atwood Magazine and is a successful TikToker and Twitch streamer. 

“I’m just a teenager who acts much older, still gets excited about little things, and really loves to over-analyze her emotions and put them into music,” AVIV said in a formal statement.
