Ever since the release of Aquarium in 1997, Barbie has had her signature track “Barbie Girl”  to pair with everything surrounding her. An iconic figure in pop culture, it was only natural that she had a perfect pop song to go along with it. Danish Pop group Aqua delivered on their debut album Aquarium in 1997, and Barbie has never been the same since. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve heard Barbie Girl everywhere I’ve gone. I’ve heard it in commercials and movies; I even danced to it at a summer camp as a kid. Aqua has become a staple in the pink, material world of Barbie. It’s only right to celebrate 25 years of the iconic single, as well as the album, with a re-release of their debut album Aquarium, and the iconic hit single Barbie Girl, which is timeless. You could play it in any club or party setting, and the crowd is guaranteed to dance and sing along.

An anthem of all things pink, glamorous, and blonde, Barbie Girl is the pinnacle of pop culture. Their stylistic choices, such as hair and makeup, make Aqua a staple of the late 90s, capturing the culture and the lifestyle. These aesthetics are paired with the iconic music video that still holds up today as an important pop culture document. As a current culture obsessed with nostalgia and the 90s/early 2000s, it’s no surprise that to this day, Barbie Girl is still receiving comments, likes, streams, and holds up to this day. The entire album as a whole is oozing 90s goodness, with lead vocals by Lene Nystrøm with her unique voice that carries on the timeless pop tunes.

The track list consists of 12 songs that are just as fun and upbeat as the leading single. It's the definition of what the 90s was all about. Listening to Aquarium transports us back to the 90s, and makes us feel like we are at a sleepover with our 3 closest friends, gossiping and painting each other's nails. Coming in pink and white colorways, Aqua is pairing their re-release with an exclusive re-release on vinyl, as well as digitally. Selling 33 million albums worldwide, Aqua has set themselves into Danish music history forever. While Aqua remains a nostalgia of the 90s, they continue to perform across the world and release new music.

Aquarium’s rerelease is out on September 23rd. You can order the limited edition vinyl and find all things Aqua here.
