Dehd releases playful new song “Mood Ring”
by Cassie Limberakis
On January 30th, Chicago-based indie-rock band Dehd released their newest single. “Mood Ring” is an exciting new release expected to be on their new album this spring. The band currently has three members: Jason Balla (lead singer and bassist), Emily Kempf (guitar), and Eric McGrady (drums). After being a part of multiple festivals, including Lollapalooza, Dehd has reached a new level of fame and will be entering into a new era of music. The band is known for adding their own flair to the indie-rock and alt-rock music scenes. Dehd cites multiple artists for their inspirations including The Cocteau Twins, Dolly Parton, and Cate LeBon.
In the beginning of the song, there is intense, hard core rock. It has a grittier exterior and a warmer sound as the song continues. Then, the song’s tempo slows down and a surf-rock feel begins to take over in the first verse. This sound is warm and nostalgic, which is a sharp contrast to the metallic sounds in the beginning. As the song progresses, it develops from a metal sound to an indie rock beat. The electric guitar sounds less intense, compared to the gritty, colder sound heard in the very beginning.
Furthermore, “Mood Ring” echoes feelings of love and desire: “Get back now, here comes my baby/Tough and rumble man with a little bit of danger/I-I-I-I can’t believe that he’s with me/He’s everything I need, my sexy little angel.” The title “Mood Ring” refers to the narrator's intense love and slight superstition surrounding a mood ring (possibly given to them by their partner). The mood ring could be an ode to the early-mid 2000s-2010s fashion staple. The band is playful with their musical approach, making this single a really fun listen.
Also, Dehd has risen to high levels of popularity because of their distinct creative choices and unique and identifiable sound. It will be exciting to see what Dehd does in the future of their careers. The new album “Poetry” will be released on May 10th with indie label Fat Possum Records.
