coin's highly-anticipated third album, 'dreamland,' dreams up success

By Mackenzie Wagner

On Feb. 21, indie-pop band COIN released their third studio album, Dreamland. Chase Lawrence, Ryan Winnen, and Joe Memmel wrote and recorded fourteen songs to create an introspective view on uncertainty and love. The album has been highly anticipated after the release of several singles prior to the album’s release.

Previous to the album’s release, the band released 7 singles, including their most recent, “Valentine,” which was released just a week before the full album. Two of these singles include “Youuu” and “Cemetery,” which fill the first half of the album with upbeat sounds as well as the expression of longing for someone and emptiness of missing out. “Youuu” is about trying to fill the void of lost love when a person can never be replaced, while “Cemetery” reflects on the regret of working one’s life away without making time for important people. Both songs display a fear of loss and regret within personal relationships.

Halfway through the album, “Dreamland Sequence” is a song that stands out from the rest of the album with both its sound and lyrics. Although the song is just about a minute and a half long, it captures a vulnerable state of mind with its lyrics and instrumental sound. The lyrics “Who knows where you’ve been / Why you feel different?” and “I wanna be here / I wanna love here” express the desire but uncertainty of being in love and carrying previous experiences into new relationships.

“Let It All Out (10:05)” wraps up the album with a song that captures everything the album stands for. The heartbreaking, hopeful, and vulnerable piece tries to find comfort in the uncertainty. The song was recorded in one take with the microphone cutting out towards the end of the track. This raw recording captures the imperfections of life, certainty, and love that COIN eloquently expresses throughout this whole album. COIN has successfully created a third album that stays true to their sound and vibe while keeping their reputation for vulnerable and unexpected songs. With that being said, Dreamland is unlike anything else COIN has ever released. This spring, COIN will be going on tour with their new album, bringing new music and experiences to their shows.
